Schumann grew up in his parents' winery. He attended the viticulture school in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse , where he graduated in 1956. After training in the Nahe and Rheingau wine-growing regions , he studied agriculture in Bonn and Berlin . In his diploma thesis he dealt with wild vines in Central Europe, his dissertation dealt with the comparison of old and new grape varieties . He was then a trainee lawyer at the State Teaching and Research Institute for Agriculture, Viticulture and Horticulture in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse and from 1971 headed the Viticulture Department for more than 30 years; From 1971 to 1986 he was also head of the vine processing department .

He has been a member of the Palatinate Wine Brotherhood since 1977, and today has the rank of Grand Master. Schumann also acted as president of the Society for the History of Wine . He is the author of numerous publications on the subject of wine, some together with other authors.

In addition to his work in viticulture, Schumann also worked as a freelancer for the Office for Monument Preservation in Speyer . When remnants of the wall were found near Ungstein during a land consolidation process in 1981 , Schumann recognized their importance; it was the remains of the wine press house of Villa rustica Weilberg , which was then uncovered under the direction of the archaeologist Helmut Bernhard . The subsequent partial reconstruction and the operation as an open-air museum happened mainly at Schumann's instigation.
