With high hopes of ending the failures of the 1990s, the young English team led by David Beckham went to the 1998 World Cup and the 1966 world champion achieved an opening win against Tunisia. In the second game, however, Romania should confirm their performance from 4 years ago. In a very exciting match, Petrescu's goal resulted in a last-minute win against the English side. Despite the tired 1-1 draw against Tunisia, Romania secured first place ahead of England. Colombia never really got into the tournament and so the team around old star Valderrama finished the tournament with 3 points in third place.
