Gábor Gabos

Gábor Gabos (born January 4, 1930 in Budapest ; † August 27, 2014 there ) was a Hungarian pianist .

Gabos studied with Lajos Hernädi at the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest, where he received a concert diploma. In 1955 he reached third place at the Concours Long-Thibaud-Crespin. In 1958 he shared second place with Wolfgang Gayler and Rolf Kuhnert at the Kranichsteiner Music Prize (piano) in Darmstadt. In 1960 he was fifth at the Concours Musical Reine Elisabeth in Brussels. Together with David Wilde , he received first prize at the Liszt Bartók Competition in Budapest.

He then became a soloist with the Hungarian Philharmonic. His concert career took him through Europe, China and the Soviet Union, with a focus on Hungary. Gabos was awarded the government's Liszt Prize, and he was also an Honored Artist of the Hungarian People's Republic.

In particular, his recordings of pieces by Béla Bartók made him known.
