Gardens of Marqueyssac

The gardens of Marqueyssac are located in the Aquitaine region in the Dordogne department and are part of the municipality of Vézac . They are very important to the boxwood culture in France and Europe. The facilities are still privately owned and have been open to the public since 1997.

geography

The gardens and castle of Marqueyssac are often referred to as the hanging gardens of Marqueyssac , as the entire complex is 130 meters on a rocky spur above the Dordogne near a bend in the river. From here you have a direct view of the towns of Beynac-et-Cazenac , Castelnaud-la-Chapelle and La Roque-Gageac and of the Dordogne, which, in addition to the Départementale D703, connects all these towns.

description

The gardens of Marqueyssac were awarded in 2004 by the French Ministry of Culture as "  jardin remarquable  " (German: remarkable garden ). The park was rebuilt in the second half of the 19th century by the palace heir Julien de Cerval . On an area of 22 hectares, it offers  over six kilometers of predominantly shaded walking paths, a labyrinth of 150,000 hand-cut, hundred-year-old box trees and a large number of noteworthy trees, shrubs and shrubs. Striking plant design elements are beside the boxwood : Mediterranean cypresses , pines , oaks , cyclamen , santolina , plumbago , rosemary .

The gardens were originally designed by a garden architect from the André Le Nôtres school . Today in Marqueyssac, unlike in the typical French garden , there is no uniformity and symmetry. Due to its often curved paths, exemplary for the time of Napoleon III. , the park achieves diversity and variety. A recently constructed viewpoint (Belvedere) allows an impressive view of the Dordogne valley, Castelnaud and La Roque-Gageac. Rest huts made of stone (cabane), a neo-Gothic chapel are the architectural fixed points in the park next to the castle .
