Gäu (Palatinate)

The Gäu is a flat area crossed by streams in the Vorderpfalz between the Haardtgebirge and the Rhine , more precisely between the German Wine Route and Harthausen . In the north it borders on the city of Neustadt an der Weinstrasse , in the south on the community of Offenbach an der Queich and the community of Lingenfeld .

Associated villages

The Gäu includes the villages of Altdorf , Böbingen , Freimersheim , Gommersheim , Großfischlingen , Kleinfischlingen , Venningen (community of Edenkoben ), Geinsheim and Duttweiler (town of Neustadt an der Weinstrasse).

The Protestant rectory in the Gäu only includes the villages of Altdorf, Böbingen, Freimersheim, Großfischlingen, Kleinfischlingen, Venningen and Duttweiler, while the Protestant rectory in Gommersheim includes the village of Freisbach in the Gäu.

For the communities Altdorf, Böbingen, Freimersheim and Gommersheim there is a primary school in Böbingen with a branch in Gommersheim. The primary school for Großfischlingen and Kleinfischlingen is located outside the Gäus in Edesheim , the one for Venningen in Edenkoben .

A secondary school can be reached by bus outside the Gäus in Maikammer , and a grammar school outside the Gäus in Edenkoben.

Local Palatine dialects are spoken in the Gäu , which are similar to the dialects of the surrounding villages and towns.

Economy, culture and leisure

The Gäu is characterized by viticulture, agriculture and tourism.

The cultural life mainly takes place at the local club level.

A cycle path leads through the Gäu. The cabbage and beet cycle path also leads through the Gäu

In 2016, the 15th edition of the Gäulauf , a running event with distances of 350 m, 1000 m, 10 km, half marathon and 7.5 km (walking) across the Gäu, took place.

The Gäu is one of the objects of the Blau Plus campaign (water development plan of the Rhineland-Palatinate Ministry for the Environment, Agriculture, Food, Viticulture and Forests).

From the beginning of the 20th century to 1956, a meter-gauge small railway, called the Pfefferminzbähnel , ran through the Gäu , connecting Neustadt an der Weinstrasse with Speyer.
