Götter wie wir is a six-part German comedy series that was broadcast on TV channel ZDFkultur in autumn 2012 and is sold on DVD in stores.
In fifteen-minute episodes, events mentioned in the Bible (e.g. exodus from Egypt ), religious concepts (e.g. continuation of life in heaven or hell ) and phenomena associated with divine work (e.g. weather ) are reinterpreted in satirical form. The series sparked protests from Christian groups.

content
The basic idea of the series is to portray the relationship between creator and creation from God's perspective, with God being embodied by Inge and Renate - two conservatively dressed middle-aged women. Inge and Renate allow the viewer to understand various unexpected difficulties of divine responsibility, including the creation of the first humans, the management of heaven and hell and the production of the weather. The comedy arises from these difficulties, but also from the presentation. The two ladies are represented by men ( see also travesty ) and speak emphatically in the dialects Hessian and Saxon .
Broadcast and release on DVD
The program has been broadcast for the first time since October 7, 2012 on Sundays at 10.30 p.m. and has since been repeated at different broadcast times (late in the evening). The series achieved above-average audience attendance, especially among young adults - the target group that ZDFkultur is primarily aimed at. An "exclusive interview with God", ie with the two protagonists, was available in the ZDF media library. Individual episodes are available on the video portals Youtube and Rutube .
The series has been available in stores on DVD since October 19, 2012.
From time to time, short videos with "Inge and Renate" are published on Facebook and Youtube. So z. B. New Year and Easter 2018.
Production and post production
The show, still under the working title "Wir sind Gott", was filmed entirely in Ultra High Definition Television , also known as 4K, in front of Greenbox and Bluebox in Berlin. In an elaborate post-production lasting several months, the co-producing Magna Mana from Frankfurt am Main added matt paintings, virtual set extensions in 3D as well as 2D and 3D compositings. For example, the division of the sea by Moses and other highlights.
Post-production also took place in UHD / 4K, only the broadcast was in HD. This should be the first TV show and series to be produced in UHD or 4K in Germany.
reception
Protests
The ZDF has received numerous protests after the broadcast of the first consequences. The Christian Internet portal cxFlyer published a letter of protest accompanied by a signature campaign, which was handed over to the audience's editorial office at the end of November after more than 25,000 signatures and shortly afterwards to the ZDF television council . The protest unites believers from the evangelical spectrum of Protestantism with pious Catholics , for example supporters of the Pius Brotherhood . ZDF received a formal program complaint from Wolfgang Baake , among others , who asserted disregard for the religious convictions of many Christians and thus a violation of the program principles laid down in the ZDF State Treaty.
In an initial reaction, Daniel Fiedler , editor-in-chief responsible for the content of ZDFkultur, took the position that the satirical form of representation, in the case of gods like us, was within the permissible range of freedom of expression. The comedy series is not intended to violate religious feelings. The ZDF television council rejected the complaint on March 8th after it had taken the view that there was no violation of the ZDF programming principles.
Odds
The first episode of "Götter wie wir" surprisingly broke all of ZDFkultur's rating records with 150,000 viewers, 110,000 of whom were 14 to 49 year olds. No other program on ZDFkultur achieved such values. The show reached an average of 60,000 viewers, which corresponds to an average market share of 0.41%. The production was thus well above the channel average for ZDFkultur, which was 0.2% in the 2012/2013 television year.
Awards
The series won the 2013 German Television Prize in the Best Comedy category. In addition, she was nominated for the Grimme Prize 2013 , but could not win the award. "Gods like us" received four nominations for the 2013 "TV Quota Meter Award" in the categories of "best series," "best leading actor," "best supporting actor" and "best supporting actress in a series."
