Ewald studied mathematics, physics, chemistry, philosophy at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz , 1954 was there with Robert Furch with his work on axiomatic construction of the circular geometry doctorate, for Rer. nat. did his doctorate and then taught in Mainz. This was followed by his habilitation in mathematics. From 1964 to 1994 Günter Ewald was Professor of Algebra and Geometry at the Ruhr University in Bochum . On October 15, 1973, he succeeded Siegfried Grosse as Rector at the Ruhr University in Bochum. After two years, Peter Meyer-Dohm took over from his rectorate on October 14, 1975 .
