Günter Fromm (Admiral)

Günter Fromm (born November 21, 1924 in Wilhelmshaven ; † July 10, 2013 ) was a German naval officer , most recently Vice Admiral of the Federal Navy and from 1978 to 1985 commander of the fleet .

Military career

Navy

Fromm joined the Navy in 1942 as an officer candidate for Crew XII / 42 . After the officer training at the Naval School Mürwik , he served on a clearing boat .

Federal Navy

On September 17, 1956, Fromm was hired as a lieutenant at sea in the German Navy.

On January 1, 1963, he was promoted to corvette captain in October of the same year, first officer of the school frigate Graf Spee and on January 1, 1964, first officer of destroyer 6 . In June 1965, Fromm became a consultant in the Federal Ministry of Defense . He was then, while promoted to frigate captain in November 1966, involved in the preparation of the commissioning of the missile destroyer Mölders , whose first commander he became in September 1969. On April 29, 1971 Fromm was promoted to sea captain and in July 1971 he became the command of the Naval Command Systems .

On October 1, 1973, Fromm was promoted to Flotilla Admiral, initially commander of the naval department and, from April 1, 1974, commander of the basic courses at the leadership academy of the German Armed Forces in Hamburg . In April 1977 he became Deputy Commander of the Fleet and was promoted to Rear Admiral on May 10, 1977.

On October 1, 1978 Fromm was promoted to vice admiral and appointed commander of the fleet. From this post he retired on March 31, 1985. This makes Fromm the fleet manager with the longest standing time in German naval history .

Later activity

German Naval Museum with destroyer Mölders

After his retirement, Fromm campaigned for the establishment of the German Naval Museum in Wilhelmshaven . The highlight of his work was the takeover of the destroyer Mölders he had put into service as a central exhibit in 2005.
