Günter Haase (born January 16, 1932 in Pulsnitz ; died February 2, 2009 in Leipzig ) was a German geographer .

Live and act

Haase studied geography at the University of Leipzig from 1951 . From 1959 to 1962 he worked as an assistant to Ernst Neef - first in Leipzig, then at the Geographical Institute of the TU Dresden . In 1962 he received his doctorate with the thesis Landscape Ecological Investigations in the Northwest Lusatian Mountain and Hill Country and became scientific secretary of the Geographical Society of the GDR . In 1969 he qualified as a professor (title of the thesis: The structure of the pedosphere in regional geographic view. Contributions to the theory and methodology of regional soil geography ), followed Edgar Lehmann's call and became an employee at the Institute for Geography of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR . From 1986 to 1998 he was head of the Natural Balance and Territorial Characteristics working group at the Saxon Academy of Sciences . From 1990 he also worked at the Leipzig-Halle Environmental Research Center . From 1990 to 1997 he was Professor of Physical Geography at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Leipzig and from 1991 to 1996 President of the Saxon Academy of Sciences.

Haase's main focus was on general and regional landscape ecology . Shaped by Neef's understanding of geoecology, he combined the ecology concept of the life sciences with the landscape concept of geography. He defined landscape as “a section of the surface of the earth that is mapped out by natural conditions and shaped or shaped by humans”.

Together with Rolf Schmidt , he was responsible for creating the soil map in the GDR atlas . After reunification, he was involved with Schmidt and Günter Roeschmann in the development of the all-German soil overview map of the Federal Republic of Germany 1: 1,000,000 (BÜK 1000) .
