Günter Möbus (born February 22, 1923 in Görlitz ; † April 8, 2009 in Greifswald ) was a German geologist .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1942 and military service in World War II , he studied geology at the Bergakademie Freiberg from 1947 and then at the University of Greifswald with Serge von Bubnoff , whom he followed (as his assistant) when he moved to the Humboldt University in Berlin in 1950 . In 1951 he obtained his geology diploma with a thesis on the Lusatian granite massif . He then worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Geotectonics of the Academy of Sciences and received his doctorate in 1954 on the Lusatian granite massif. In 1963 he completed his habilitation in Jena at Deubel and was then a lecturer at the Humboldt University in Berlin. In 1968 he became a full professor at the University of Greifswald. There he held the chair for geotectonics at what is now the Institute for Geography and Geology. In 1988 he retired.

He wrote a textbook on geotectonics (first published in 1956) and on regional geology, including Lusatia, the Harz Mountains and the Alps (although he was unable to visit them for a long time due to the political situation in the GDR). In 2001 a popular science book about Hiddensee was published .

In 1980 he received the Abraham Gottlob Werner badge of honor and in 1981 the Serge von Bubnoff Medal . In 1978 he became a member of the Leopoldina . In 1991 he received the Medal of Honor from the Technical University of Zielona Góra.

He was a member of the scientific advisory board for local research of the Institute for Geography and Geoecology of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR and was co-author of the series Values ​​of our Homeland .
