Günter Mangelsdorf (born July 20, 1947 in Prietzen , Westhavelland district , † July 12, 2008 in Greifswald ) was a German prehistoric and medieval archaeologist . From 1984 to 2004 he worked at the Ernst Moritz Arndt University Greifswald , since 1992 as a full professor.

Life

Mangelsdorf grew up in Havelland . He completed his studies in 1972 at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg with a degree in prehistoric studies. In 1975 he received his doctorate from the “Karl Liebknecht” University of Education in Potsdam with a thesis on the medieval devastation of Havelland . From 1973/1974 he worked as a city and district archaeologist in Brandenburg an der Havel .

In 1984 Mangelsdorf received a position as a research assistant for prehistory and early history at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald , where he was to work for over two decades. In 1985 he became curator of the collection of prehistoric antiquities . In 1984 he completed his habilitation here with studies on medieval ceramics from the 12th to 15th centuries in western Brandenburg .

In 1990 he became a university lecturer. At the same time, under Rector Hans-Jürgen Zobel, the Institute for Prehistory and Protohistory at the University of Greifswald was re-established and Mangelsdorf became director of the institute, the first since Carl Engel († 1947). In 1992 Mangelsdorf became a full professor. Mangelsdorf succeeded in developing the subject of prehistory in Greifswald promisingly. Starting in 1992, major students joined the minor subject students. But as early as 1996, the university management under Zobel's successor Jürgen Kohler ordered the institute for prehistory to be closed again, and the chair was attached to the historical institute. Mangelsdorf was retired on December 1, 2004. The university management has since left the chair vacant. Günter Mangelsdorf died on July 12, 2008 after a long and serious illness.

Mangelsdorf's research focus was on the archeology of the Slavic and early German Middle Ages (see: Medieval Archeology ). In the 1990s he carried out excavations at the Eldena Monastery and the Grobe Monastery, among others . He also devoted himself to the research history of prehistory and early history, for example in 2007 he published the diaries of Carl Engel, his predecessor on the chair.

Mangelsdorf was a member of the historical commission for Pomerania , at times also a board member.
