Günter Oldenburg (General)

Günter Oldenburg (born September 3, 1931 in Stettin ; † June 16, 2010 ) was an officer in the National People's Army , most recently in the rank of major general .

Life and career

Günter Oldenburg was born as the son of a worker in Stettin. He graduated from school in 8th grade. Until 1947 he worked as a casual worker. From 1947 to 1949 he completed an apprenticeship as a baker.

Military career

On November 9, 1949, Günter Oldenburg joined the armed organs of the GDR as an officer student at the VP School in Prora . After completing his training in 1950, he was employed as a platoon leader in the Löbau VP office until 1952 . In 1952 he joined the SED . From 1952 to 1953 Oldenburg was a sports officer in the KVP department in Löbau and then assistant and head of a sub-department. In the Aeroklub Bautzen he was employed from 1953 to 1954 as a senior officer in operational work and then until 1955 as chief of staff of the 3rd department. In the years 1955 to 1959 he graduated from a military academy of the USSR.

From 1960 Oldenburg was in the Air Force / Air Defense Command of the NVA, initially head of the operational work subdivision and, from 1962, deputy to the head of the operational work staff. He graduated from the General Staff Academy of the USSR from 1969 to 1971 . After his return, he was employed again from 1971 to 1972 in the LSK / LV command as deputy to the chief of staff for operational work and as chief of staff (m. D. F. b.).

On June 1, 1972, Colonel Oldenburg succeeded Major General Kurt Rappmann as commander of the 3rd Air Defense Division in Trollenhagen . Colonel Oldenburg was appointed major general on October 7, 1974 . During this time he was a member of the SED district leadership in Neubrandenburg from February 1979 to February 1981. On November 30, 1981 he handed over command of the 3rd LVD to Colonel Hans Partzsch .

With effect from March 1, 1982 Oldenburg took over from Major General Gerhard Rother the post of military attaché at the embassy of the GDR in the USSR . He handed this over to Major General Hans Unterdörfel on May 31, 1987 .

Subsequently, Oldenburg was commanded to be chief reconnaissance in the Ministry of National Defense (MfNV) until 1988 . In 1989 he succeeded Major General Harry Rathmann as Deputy Head of Enlightenment and Chief 2nd Administration in the area of Enlightenment of the MfNV. In 1990 he was succeeded by Colonel Jura Hoffmann .

On April 30, 1990, Major General Günter Oldenburg was released into retirement. He last lived in Schweina and died at the age of 78.
