Günter Stempel (born November 17, 1908 in Breslau , † October 22, 1981 in Celle ) was a German politician ( LDP ).

Life

The son of a doctor studied law in Wroclaw . After the legal traineeship, he worked in a Berlin law firm from 1933 to 1939; until the end of the war he was indispensable as a syndic of a war-important company .

After the end of the war he joined the LDP and in September 1945 became its secretary for organization. From 1948 to 1950 he was General Secretary of the LDP. During the same period he was a member of the German People's Council and the Provisional People's Chamber of the GDR .

Stempel was arrested on August 8, 1950 for rejecting the GDR's electoral law, which provided for uniform lists of all parties, in disregard of his parliamentary immunity. On September 6, 1950, he was expelled from the LDP. A Soviet military tribunal sentenced him to 25 years of forced labor on January 7, 1952 . In April 1952 he was sent to the Vorkuta camp in the Soviet Union . In December 1953 he was brought back to Berlin. In May 1954, Stempel had to testify in the show trial against Karl Hamann . In August 1954 he was transferred back to the Vorkuta camp. In December 1955 he was handed over to the authorities of the GDR and released from the Bautzen prison on April 28, 1956 .

After his release, Stempel went to West Berlin , where he worked as an administrative clerk and, together with Thomas Dehler, campaigned for Karl Hamann to be released. Stempel died in Celle on October 22, 1981.
