Günther Leichtfried

Günther Leichtfried (born May 21, 1949 in Ybbs an der Donau ) is an Austrian AHS teacher and politician ( SPÖ ). Leichtfried was a member of the Federal Council from 1998 to 1999 , from 1999 to 2013 a member of the state parliament of Lower Austria and from 1997 to 2019 mayor of Wieselburg .

Career

Günther Leichtfried was born the son of the Federal Councilor and member of the Landtag, Josef Leichtfried , and grew up in the Waldviertel. From 1955 to 1959 he attended elementary school in Groß-Siegharts and then until 1960 the secondary school in Waidhofen an der Thaya . He then moved to the secondary school in Waidhofen an der Thaya in 1960 and graduated from school in 1968 with the Matura. After completing his military service between 1968 and 1969, Leichtfried studied law for two semesters at the University of Vienna and then from 1970 studied biology and chemistry as a teacher. He graduated in 1975 with the academic degree Mag. Rer. nat. from. Leichtfried worked from 1974 to 1975 as an AHS teacher at the Bundesgymnasium Tulln and then taught from 1975 to 1997 at the Bundesoberstufenrealgymnasium Scheibbs . Leichtfried was awarded the professional title of professor in 1978 and has been on leave since 1998.

He lives in Wieselburg , is married and has two daughters and a son.

politics

Leichtfried was involved as a teacher in the union and was a staff representative and union representative of the Social Democratic Union of the Austrian Federation of Trade Unions in Lower Austria, with Leichtfried head of the AHS teacher section. Within the party, he has held the district chairmanship of the SPÖ Scheibbs since 1997 and is a member of the SPÖ state party executive and state party presidency. Leichtfried has been a member of Wieselburg's municipal council since 1990, was elected city council in 1993 and vice mayor in 1995. From 1997 to 2019 Leichtfried held the office of mayor of Wieselburg. Leichtfried was also a member of the Federal Council from January 1, 1998 to November 17, 1999 and has represented the SPÖ in the Lower Austrian state parliament since November 18, 1999. On March 25, 2010, the SPÖ Lower Austria unanimously elected Leichtfried as club chairman in the Lower Austrian state parliament. He succeeded Helmut Cerwenka , who withdrew from politics. He himself resigned from the state parliament on April 24, 2013 after the SPÖ's losses in the 2013 state election .

In April 2019 he was succeeded by Josef Leitner as mayor of Wieselburg.
