The GIGA Information Center is Germany's largest special library for regional studies ( area studies ) and comparative regional studies ( comparative area studies ). The four regional specialist libraries collect literature on economic, political and social developments in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East, literature comparing regions as well as literature on theory and methods of the social sciences. The specialist libraries for Africa, Latin America and the Middle East are located on Neuer Jungfernstieg , and the specialist library for Asia is on Rothenbaumchaussee .

The center procures, indexes and archives literature and specialist information from the fields of social sciences, political sciences and economics. The task is to supply the scientists of the German Institute for Global and Area Studies with information . In addition, the holdings are made available to the public for use.

Library holdings

The inventory comprises around 200,000 media units (monographs, journals, yearbooks) (as of 2019). A total of approx. 9,950 licensed journals are available, 5,988 of which are current years and 488 printed journals. The IZ's online catalog gives users access to around 99,000 (as of December 2015) freely available full texts published on the Internet.

Catalog and research

In addition to cataloging the holdings, the content of books, articles, working papers and electronic sources is made accessible, i. H. provided with keywords ( descriptors ). The European Thesaurus on International Relations and Area Studies is the basis for the indexing of the content , which is co-created and maintained with the participation of the IZ. The holdings of the IZ can be researched using an online catalog.

Services

The IZ is open to the public. Books can be borrowed in an extended weekend loan from Friday to Tuesday. The IZ makes the holdings available nationwide via the inter- library loan system of the German libraries. The formal data and some of the data of the subject indexing of the portfolio can in the online catalog, the portal Ireon be researched as well as the Virtual Libraries CrossAsia, MENALIB and ilissAfrica. Since July 2013, the holdings have been researchable via the network catalog of the Südwestdeutscher Bibliotheksverbund (SWB) and are thus again available for interlibrary loan .

As a service facility for the scientists at the GIGA, the IZ provides services in the areas of information provision, research data management, the imparting of information literacy and open access.

The FIV is a federally funded cooperation model, unique in Germany, for the division of labor into a scientific database World Affairs Online WAO.
