The fork tip is a 3071  m above sea level. A. high mountain peaks of the Prettaukamm in the Venediger group . The summit is on the Italian-Austrian border. The first ascent of the south summit took place on August 29, 1893 by the brothers Thaddäus and Marian von Smoluchowski , the north summit was first climbed on August 30, 1904 by Ingenuin Hechenblaikner and Eduard Franzelin.

The Gabelspitze is located on the border between the South Tyrolean communities of Prettau and Sand in Taufers in the west and the East Tyrolean community of St. Jakob in Defereggen ( Lienz district ) in the east. In relation to the Prettaukamm, the fork tip is in the southwest. The fork tip consists of a north or south summit, with the striking south summit being the main summit. According to some sources, the north summit is 3076  m above sea level. A. meters higher than the south summit. The two peaks of the Gabelspitze lie between the Arventalspitze ( 3083  m above sea level ) in the north and the Großer Reinhard ( 2790  m above sea level ) in the south. To the west, separated by the Alprechscharte, lies the Schneespitze ( 2925  m above sea level ). Furthermore, a ridge runs from the southern fork tip exactly to the south to the Kleiner Reinhard ( 2631  m ), in the course of which a ridge tower that stands out as Mutti ( 2980  m ) rises. The east side of the Gabelspitze falls to the Arvental with the Arventalbach , the north-west side to the Ahrntal , the south-west side to the Reintal . The mountain flanks of the Gabelspitze are protected by the Hohe Tauern National Park and the Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park .

Promotion opportunities

The normal route to the south summit starts at the Alpengasthaus Oberhaus and then runs first on the Almstraße to the Jagdhausalm and then to the Arventalalm. Below the Klammljoch the pathless ascent begins over the east-facing grass and fine gravel slopes to the gap between the north and south peaks. The final ascent to the south summit is over brittle rock in chimney and wall climbing ( II ). The very steep ascent to the north summit also leads from the notch between the two peaks in a direct line over brittle rock to the summit ( II + ).
