The Gallberg is 467  m above sea level. NHN high extinct volcanic cone in the Vogelsberg near Herbstein in the Vogelsberg district in East Hesse .

The Gallberg rises in the Hoher Vogelsberg Nature Park . Its summit is 1.1 km south-south-west of the center of Herbsteiner Kernort, 2.8 km northeast of the Herbsteiner district Lanzenhain and 900 m north-north-west of the Herbsteiner hamlet Oberndorf .

The Michelsbach flows northwest past the Gallberg , whose water flows through the Eichholzwasser to the Scheerwasser, which runs southeast of the Gallberg and through Herbstein . The latter is a tributary of the Alte Hasel, which flows into the Altefeld .

On the eastern slope of the Gallberg there is a quarry , on the western slope a residual open pit lake and on the transition area to the west-southwestern Diebstein ( 577.2  m ) there is another quarry.

Natural allocation

The Gallberg belongs to the natural spatial main unit group Osthessisches Bergland (No. 35) and in the main unit Unterer Vogelsberg (350) to the subunit Eastern Lower Vogelsberg (350.3). To the south-west, the landscape leads over into the subunit Eastern High Vogelsberg (351.1), which is part of the main unit High Vogelsberg (351).

Protected areas

Parts of the bird sanctuary Vogelsberg (VSG no. 5421-401; 636.4497  km² ) are located on the Gallberg . Except for its south and south-east slopes , those of the fauna-flora-habitat area Talauen near Herbstein (FFH no. 5422-303; 13.7911 km²) extend.
