Gareth (first name)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gareth ( ˈɡarɛθ ) is a male given name from Wales . It was first used in this form in Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur . Here it was the name of Sir Gareth , a brother of Gawain and one of the Knights of the Round Table. Malory derived it from Gahariet , a name that appeared in French Arthurian legends. This may have had a Welsh origin, possibly with the name Geraint or the word gwaredd , which means kindness, kindness or amiability.

The name is still popular in Wales to this day , where it is sometimes belittled to Gary.
