from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Helwig Garth (also: Helvig Garthe, Helvicius Garthius ; * December 28, 1579 in Kirtorf near Alsfeld / Hessen; † December 5, 1619 in Prague ) was a German Lutheran theologian.

Life

Helwig was born as the son of the Kirtorf pastor Balthasar Garth (born April 25, 1550 in Frankenberg; † October 30, 1598 in Alsfeld (Pest)) and his wife Katharina (née Höltzscher, also: Hultscher; Hältscher; * 1562; † 28. Born October 1598 in Alsfeld (Pest)). After initial training at home, he attended school in Hersfeld from 1591 . At the. On October 15, 1594, he was enrolled at the University of Marburg , where he received a bachelor's degree in philosophy in 1595 and advanced to a master's degree in philosophical sciences in 1597. Then he started with Johannes Winckelmann and Balthasar Mentzer the Eldera degree in theology. His parents, brothers and sisters died during his studies, so that in order to have the necessary financial resources, he accepted a position as tutor for the children of the Hessian Landgrave Ludwig in Darmstadt . When the Landgrave's son Heinrich died at the age of eleven and his brother Friedrich moved to France with another brother, he ended this employment relationship.

Garth therefore moved to the University of Strasbourg in 1601 to continue his theological studies with Johannes Pappus and Philipp Marbach . On January 14, 1602, he moved to the University of Tübingen , where he received his doctorate in theology on May 11, 1602. He then moved to the University of Wittenberg on January 14, 1603 . Here in particular Aegidius Hunnius the Elder became his patron. In the same year he received an appointment as pastor and superintendent in Oschatz . After he was ordained on July 6, 1603 at the Wittenberg town church , he began the task on October 25 of the same year. In December 1609 he changed to the Freiberg Cathedral as senior pastor and thus became superintendent in Freiberg . Ultimately, in 1613 he moved to the Salvator Church in Prague as pastor and inspector . In 1619 he became consistorial assessor in Prague. However, he had no effect in that position because he died that same year. His body was buried on December 15, 1619 in the Salvator Church.

Some theological pamphlets, pamphlets, literature on Christian edification, and homiletics come from Garth. He deserves a special mention as the editor of a Latin-Greek dictionary by his father, which has had numerous editions.

family

Garth married on April 24, 1604 in Wittenberg Sabine Hunnius (born September 3, 1580 in Marburg, † October 20, 1621 in Wittenberg), the daughter of Wittenberg theology professor Aegidius Hunnius the Elder. There are three sons and two daughters from the marriage. From the children we know:
