Guwahati ( Assamese : গুৱাহাটী , Guvāhāṭī ; formerly Gauhati ) is a city in the Indian state of Assam on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra . With about 960,000 inhabitants (2011 census) it is by far the largest settlement in northeast India.
The suburb of Dispur , only 10 kilometers from the city center, is the seat of the government of Assam. The main attractions of Guwahati include the Kamakhya Temple - a Tantristic Saktism institution that attracts many pilgrims - and the Assam State Museum with a large archaeological and ethnographic collection.
Guwahati is home to the Gauhati High Court , a zoological garden, food and petrochemical industries. The airport (Lok-Priya Gopinath Bordoloi Airport) is located 20 km southwest of the city and is named after the former Chief Minister of Assam Gopinath Bordoloi . Since 1994, in addition to Gauhati University , the city has also had an Indian Institute of Technology ( IIT Guwahati ).
Guwahati is the seat of a Catholic archdiocese .
