Gawriil Abramowitsch Ilisarow ( Russian Гавриил Абрамович Илизаров ; born June 15, 1921 in Białowieża , Poland , † July 24, 1992 in Kurgan ) was an orthopedic surgeon in the Soviet Union .

Life

As a child of poor peasants of the Jewish faith, Ilisarov did not see his first textbook until he was ten. Nevertheless, he finished school as the best - in half the regular time. He studied medicine at the Georgievsky Medical University of Crimea , which was relocated from Simferopol to Kazakhstan during the German-Soviet War . After he had passed the final exam in 1944, he was ordered to Kurgan Oblast . For years he was the only doctor there:

“I pulled teeth, cut appendixes from the bellies of Siberian farmers and healed the children's ailments. But what fascinated me most was orthopedics and traumatology. "

In 1950 he came to the Kurgan District Hospital as an orthopedic surgeon. There was a lack of tools to treat broken bones and the farmers did not want to lie in bed for weeks. In 1951 he presented his epoch-making ring fixator for the closed treatment of bone fractures . For Ilisarov "one method, but more than 300 possible uses".

“Whenever I drove to the patient in a horse-drawn cart, I always had kumt , crooked wood and a drawbar in front of me. One day I got the idea. "

Callus distraction , which enables the elongation (and segment transport) of long bones, developed from the new procedure . After ten years of using the fixator , Ilisarow qualified as a doctor medizinskych nauk (doctor of medical science). In 1968 he operated Valery Nikolaevich Brumel . In 1971 he became director of the Kurgan Research Institute for Experimental and Clinical Orthopedics and Traumatology . It examined the biology of ossification and new methods of treating bone fractures and orthopedic diseases. A new clinic was built for him for 140 million rubles ; With 1,000 beds and 168 junior doctors, it was the largest in the world for orthopedics. By 1983 Ilisarov had used his fixator in 25,000 cases; in the Soviet Union there were 300,000. 400 colleagues came to Ilisarov's congress in September 1983, but only one from Moscow.

By chance, Ilisarov and his method became known in Kurgan's twin town Rufina (Tuscany) . Carlo Mauri had an operation in Kurgan and praised Ilisarov in Italy. German tourists heard about it and sent their chondrodystrophic son to Kurgan. Der Stern reported on this story in October 1983.

Ilisarow supervised 7 habilitation theses and 52 doctoral theses . He founded the Kurgan Orthopedists and Traumatologists Society. He was a leading member of the Soviet Academy of Sciences and editor of the professional journal Ortopedija, Trawmatologija i Protesirowanije . Ilisarov died at the age of 71.

In Germany, the Berufsgenossenschaftliche Unfallkrankenhaus Hamburg is the reference center for the Ilisarow procedure. After Dietmar Wolter hosted the first Ilisarow conference in Hamburg in 1989, Ilisarow came to Boberg for the second in 1990 . There he was a founding member of the German Ilisarow Society . All senior physicians at the BUKH were obliged to travel to Kurgan and learn about Ilisarov's methods. The German Social Accident Insurance funded the Hamburg development of "intelligent" systems in a hexapod arrangement .
