Gaylussacia ursina ( English Bear or Mountain huckleberry ) is a species of the heather family. It is native to the coastal plains of the southeastern United States ( Georgia , Tennessee , North Carolina , South Carolina ) in the southern Appalachians .

description

Gaylussacia ursina is a deciduous shrub up to about 1.5 meters high that occasionally forms large stands. The bark is brown to dark brown.

The entire, single and very short stalked, slightly leathery and alternate leaves are ovate to obovate or elliptical. They are pointed to pointed at the tip and wedge-shaped to rounded at the base. They are glandular underneath and hairy on the veins. The young leaves are reddish.

The stalked flowers with bracts are in racemose groups of 4 ... 6. The glandular pedicel is slightly hairy. The reddish-white to green flowers are about five-fold with a double flower envelope . The five-lobed, glandular calyx is small and the crown is cup-shaped with small lobes. The multi-chambered ovary is subordinate. The approximately 10 stamens are included.

The multi-seeded, smooth drupes ( false fruit ) are black, sweet and juicy, with the calyx cavity at the top. They are about 7-10 millimeters in size and should be edible. The small seeds are 1 millimeter in size and smooth.
