The Gazon du Faing (German outdated: Rossberg ) is a mountain on the main ridge of the southern Vosges , which forms the border between the departments of Haut-Rhin (Upper Rhine ) and Vosges and thus between the historic regions of Alsace and Lorraine . The mountain has a height of 1302 meters. It is located west of Lac Noir (German: Black Lake) and east of the Route des Crêtes (Vogesenkammstraße) in the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park .
location
The granite summit of the Gazon du Faing lies between the Col du Bonhomme (German: Diedolshauser Pass) and the Col de la Schlucht (German: Schluchtpass). The closest municipalities are Soultzeren (German: Sulzern) on the Alsatian side and Le Valtin on the Lorraine side . To the south is the mountain Le Tanet (1293 m).
tourism
The summit area of the Gazon du Faing is almost flat and belongs to the area of the high pastures of the Hautes Chaumes (Alemannic: Wasen); to the east the plateau drops steeply towards Lac Noir. The mountain offers a remarkable view of the Münstertal and the Orbey / Urbeis valley . South of the mountain, over which the long-distance hiking trail GR 5 (part of the European long-distance hiking trail E2 ) leads, lies a Ferme-auberge (mountain inn). The Réserve naturelle nationale du Tanet-Gazon du Faing, created in 1988, forms an area of 505 hectares on the Lorraine side .
