Geilrath is a part of the Kerpen district of Blatzheim in the Rhein-Erft district in North Rhine-Westphalia .

location

Geilrath is located on the eastern edge of the Steinheide forest . The Steinheide is also counted as part of the Bürgewald . The closest neighboring towns are Sindorf (Kerpen) in the east and Manheim in the west.

In addition to Geilrath, the Cologne-Aachen railway runs in the south, the federal motorway 4 with the Elsdorf driveway in the north, the coal railway from the Hambach opencast mine in the west and the federal highway 477 in the east . As a result, since the A4 was moved and the coal railway was built, Geilrath has become an island between the various traffic routes.

history

Geilrath was first mentioned in a document in 873 as Geilrode . According to the local legend, St. Arnold von Arnoldsweiler changed his horse during his ride around the Bürgewald in Geilrath. From the Middle Ages to the French era , Geilrath served the Blatzheim Cistercian monastery as an estate.

Geilrath has belonged to the municipality of Blatzheim since the French times and to the city of Kerpen since the municipal reorganization in 1975.

Due to its location between the autobahn, coal railway, federal highway and railway, Geilrath should be relocated. However, since the negotiations with the mine operator RWE failed , these plans were rejected in 2009, so that Geilrath will not be relocated after all.
