action

prehistory

In the fictional future of the year 2047 AD, humanity spreads across the galaxy together with the Zentradi, the former enemies, with large fleets. The fleets repeatedly come under heavy attacks by the Vajra, an extraterrestrial race that resembles an insect state and forms a eusocial collective . Although this species is scattered over large parts of the galaxy, the individuals can communicate via so-called fold waves, which allow an exchange of information that is faster than light .

At this time, Ranshe Mei was working with Grace O'Connor as an assistant for Mao Nome, who was already known from Macross Zero . While examining the vajra on the 117th Research Fleet, Ranshe contracted a virus called "V-Type" during her pregnancy. Her daughter Ranka Mei is infected with the deadly disease at a very young age. Since Ranka is a quarter of Zentradi, she can overcome the dangerous effects of the virus before birth, which she has since been immunized against it. Ranka, unconsciously carrying the virus, can communicate with the vajra while singing via the fold waves released by the virus.

It is unclear whether it is Ranka's singing or an experiment by Grace O'Connor that draws the vajra to the 117th Research Fleet. In the fight against the attackers, hopelessly inferior, the fleet is completely destroyed. Only some people can escape this hell. They include Ranka, her older brother Brera Sterne, and Grace O'Connor. Separated from her brother, losing her mother and suffering from amnesia as a result of the events, Ranka Mei is rescued and adopted by fighter pilot Ozma Lee. Since then she has been called Ranka Lee . While Ranka is growing up on the Macross Frontier convoy , Sheryl Nome, Mao Nome's orphaned granddaughter, is taken in by the cyborg Grace O'Connor and abused for further experiments. During these attempts, Sheryl is also infected with the virus. Brera also falls into Grace's hands and is brought under her control by implants.

First raids on the Frontier convoy

In 2059 AD, the two convoys Macross Frontier and Macross Galaxy are traveling near the Galactic Core in search of a colonizable world. In the meantime, Sheryl has risen to become a famous singer and intergalactic idol thanks to the not selfless support of Grace. Having grown up on the Macross Galaxy, she is expected to make several guest appearances on the Macross Frontier. During the preparations, the aerobatic pilot Alto Saotome, who was hired for effect flights with some of his fellow students from the Mihoshi flight academy, meets with Ranka. Ranka has now developed into a typical teenager . She is a big fan of Sheryl and was also on her way to the concert when she tried to take a shortcut and got lost. He helps her to get to her seat in good time for the beginning of the concert and begins the performance with his flight companions. Driven by youthful recklessness, he flies too risky a maneuver and pushes Sheryl off the stage in such a way that she involuntarily ends up in his arms and is forced to end her performance in this pose. But before the performance ends, the alarm condition is called when a group of Vajra enter the dome of the mother ship. In this dispute within one of the inhabited cities, Alto takes control of a VF-25 , the pilot of which died before his eyes, and saves Ranka, frozen in shock, from the attackers. Ozma Lee - the leader of the squadron of the private military service provider SMS and adoptive father of Ranka - becomes aware of Alto. After an entrance exam, Alto joined the service provider SMS as a recruit and was given the nickname Skull 4 .

Ranka's career

Meanwhile, Ranka, unable to remember her rescue because of her recurring amnesia, is encouraged by Sheryl to pursue her dream of a singing career. After a few appearances as an advertising character, Ranka got a small guest role in a film adaptation of the historical events from Macross Zero for the people of the Macross universe . While SMS provides the variable fighter for the filming , Mao Nome's actress has an accident, so that Ranka takes her place. The film is celebrated as a success by the audience at the premiere and Ranka is enthusiastically received by the audience. As a result of her positive reception, Ranka is often pressed for time and is preparing for her first live performance in the concert hall, where she once admired Sheryl. She plans to give Alto a birthday present. Sheryl gets ahead of her and he flies with her to Gallia 4 , a planet with a real atmosphere, which he dreamed of all his life under the dome of the Macross Frontier.

The remains of the 117th research fleet

When the Sheryl, no longer cared for by Grace, collapses on her mission to appease the center of the planet, exhausted on arrival, a splinter unit of the squadron there serves as a reason to trigger a revolt. Informed of the situation, Ranka travels to the planet together with Michael, a good friend and member of the SMS . There she manages to calm the angry Zentradi, while Alto can eliminate the leader of the revolt.

When Alto wants to travel home with Ranka, the technology of the variable fighter fails and they crash near the missing Macross of the 117th research fleet. Under the mother ship is a nest of the vajra, into which Ranka is kidnapped. The Vajra controlled by Grace finally launch into orbit with Ranka on board when the planet is destroyed by an ignited folding weapon and the Zentradi squadron also kills. Michael, Sheryl and Alto can barely escape. In the ensuing battle, Ranka is freed from the spaceship by Brera Sterne and Alto, and they return to the Macross Frontier .

Ranka's relationship with the vajra

Soon the unusual effect of Ranka's singing on the vajra is observed and attempts are made to use her and her voice as a distraction for attacking vajra, which gives her a fame similar to that of the idol Lynn Minmay . Meanwhile, Sheryl's health continues to deteriorate and she also gets psychological problems when she realizes that she currently has little to oppose her rival, both in the music business and in her love for Alto.

After another devastating attack on the main ship of the convoy, in which Ranka's friend Nanase is badly wounded and Michael is killed, Ranka decides not to sing anymore. When she realizes that her pet Ai-kun, with whom she had become friends, is also a vajra in an early stage of development, she leaves the ship with Brera and sets off for the home planet of the vajra in order to meet Ai-kun with his conspecifics bring. In doing so, she falls into Grace's trap, who uses her ability to control the vajra.

Leon's betrayal and Grace's plans

Meanwhile, Ozma Lee and his former lover, Cathy Glass, find out that the leadership of the Macross Frontier has been overthrown. The government adviser Leon Mishima killed Howard Glass, the incumbent head of government and father of Cathy. He also tried to have his accomplice Grace eliminated, but he did not succeed. So they inform their closest friends of the events and leave the network with the now renegade battle cruiser Macross Quarter , the main ship of the SMS . Alto and Luca stay behind on the mother ship Macross Frontier . The renegades search the remains of Gallia 4 for further clues and find parts of Grace's plans, but are late to return to the main fleet, which is already preparing to attack the home planet of the Vajra.

Final argument

Sheryl, who has meanwhile been tracked down by the new government, is now to take on the role of Ranka, as she also carries the "V-Type" virus and can influence the vajra. Its effect is much weaker, but it is enhanced by its special earring. Shortly after the battle breaks out, the broken Ranka, now in the overwhelmed Battle Galaxy , the flagship of the Macross Galaxy convoy , begins to unite the Vajra with her song against the attacking Macross Frontier convoy, ironically with the Song Ai, Oboete Imasu ka from the Macross film of the same name The Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love? with which humanity repelled an invasion on its part. Meanwhile, her brother ensures that none of her friends can get to Ranka. He even shoots down to the horror of Sheryl, Klan and Luca Alto's machine, but is himself hit and wounded by the Macross Quarter, who appears at the moment . Some of his implants are destroyed and Brera is no longer under Grace's control.

The arrived Macross Quarter now supports the convoy and has Leon arrested with the evidence found. Shortly before it was shot down, Alto managed to free himself from his Variable Fighter and he survived under the protection of wreckage floating around. Equipped with a new fighter, he asks Sheryl to sing even more intensely to wake Ranka out of her condition. They succeed in doing this, but Grace has meanwhile connected directly with the crush queen of the collective. All attacks against these are ineffective because of a fold-wave protective screen. However, Ranka manages to settle her argument with Sheryl in a telepathic connection made possible by Sheryl's earrings. Alto can then free Ranka from inside the Battle Galaxy . The vajra recognize from Ranka's and Sheryl's different chanting that what they perceived as chaos in humanity is individuality, they sacrifice themselves to protect the convoy and help the people advance to the queen. In their vicinity, Alto can kill the Grace associated with her.

The vajra withdraw peacefully and the damaged ships of the fleet touch down on the planet to establish a new colony. Alto can finally enjoy his desired heaven and also Klan, who lost her great love with Michael, finds new courage. Sheryl and Ranka understand each other now and agree on a fair fight for Alto's love.

Age: 17
A student in the pilot training program at Mihoshi High School ( 美 星 学園 高校 Mihoshi gakuen kōkō ), who comes from a family of actors known for their kabuki performances. Despite his rather distant character, he is actually a normal teenager who, due to his pursuit of pilot training, fell out with his father, the well-known kabuki actor Ranzo Saotome , who even denied him in front of others as his son, even when he became seriously ill.

Ranka Lee

While attending a girls' high school, she works as a waitress in the Chinese restaurant Nyan-Nyan , and has dreamed of becoming a singer since childhood. Sheryl is her great role model, who above all gives her courage with a few tips in fulfilling her dream. With the start of her singing career, her talent caused a sensation even before her first live concert in Frontier , when she ensured that both rebellious Zentradi and Vajra cease fighting through her singing.

Since an attack by the vajra on her original home, the 117th large research convoy, Ranka has suffered from psychological amnesia . She has no memories from her childhood, not even that she is the daughter of Ranshe Mei. Only one song called Aimo is left to her.

Beauty and talent are reflected in great self-confidence and sometimes arrogance.

Her pain is all the greater when she has to realize that her manager had planned her success for a long time, and that even because of a serious illness she is no longer able to keep up with Ranka as a new rising star.

Conception

Similarities to previous series, films, and OVAs

Macross Frontier shares some similarities and references to previous series and OVAs in the franchise. Ranka, for example, like Minmay Lynn from The Super Dimension Fortress Macross, works in a Chinese restaurant and wears clothes that look similar. She also sang the song Watashi no Kare wa Pilot during her appearance at the Miss Macross competition and her rescue by Alto in the second episode of the series is similar to the rescue of Minmay by Hikaru Ichijo. In the same episode, a song by the band Fire Bomber from Macross 7 can be heard in Ozma Lee's car.

Relationship triangle

As in previous films, Macross Frontier relies on a triangular relationship between the main characters and some supporting roles. In many places the "triangle" is deliberately alluded to. Triangular lens flares are used in scenes in which all three main characters can be seen. The naming of the first single as Triangler also supports this concept, as does the "picture frames" designed as a triangle in the opening credits of the series.

After the use of CGI had already been partially relied on in OVA Macross Zero , the use of such elements in Macross Frontier was expanded.

Others

Pizza Hut advertises the series on pizza boxes . A new creation has also been introduced, consisting of seafood, fried chicken and tartar sauce.

Based on the ambiguous appearance of the logo, Macross Fufonfia is a web anime that is produced parallel to the television series and is regularly published on the website for the Macross Frontier series. In the approximately two-minute webisodes, all the main characters of the mother series appear in SD drawing style, but are brought into the vicinity of an office building of a Japanese software company called Frontier Software . The individual webisodes are unsynchronized, which means that the entire dialogue is implemented by overlaying text.

Furthermore, a radio program called Radio Macross was broadcast as an Internet stream on the radio stations MBS Radio and Bunka Hōsō , which went on air on January 3, 2008. The show is moderated by the seiyū of the characters Ranka Lee and Bobby Margot, Megumi Nakajima and Kenta Miyake .
