Georg Anton Jasmatzi (actually: Georgios Antoniou Iasmatzis ) (born May 5, 1846 in Constantinople , † February 24, 1922 in Dresden ) was a Greek-German tobacco manufacturer. Today the f6 cigarette is produced in the former Jasmatzi cigarette factory .

Life

Georg Anton Jasmatzi was the son of Anton Nicolaus Jatzmatzi, a merchant in Constantinople, and Kerikiza Hatzifoti. He was a Greek Orthodox Christian . Georg Anton Jasmatzi moved to Dresden in 1868. First he worked as a foreman at Compagnie Laferme. In 1877 he married Erdmuthe Clara Auguste (1850–1937) in Dresden. The couple had 2 sons, Johannes Anton and Konstantin (1885–1935), who later became co-owners of their father's cigarette company.

In 1883 Georg Anton Jasmatzi set up his own business with a capital of 930 marks by selling hand- rolled cigarettes . Two years later he rented a shop in downtown Dresden to sell his cigarettes. In 1889 Jasmatzi purchased a piece of land on Blasewitzer Strasse . In 1900 he built a production building at Schandauer Strasse 68.

Soon his company with the brands Cheops , Sphinx and Ramses surpassed the companies Kosmos, Union, Patras and Macedonia, which also produced cigarettes in Dresden- Striesen . Jasmatzi became the Greek consul in Saxony . In 1901 he converted his company into Jasmatzi AG , whereupon he remained the sole company director under the majority shareholder American Tobacco . With a capital of 10 million marks, it was the largest corporation in the tobacco industry in Germany. When American Tobacco in 1901 withdrew Jasmatzi's sole right to sign against his will and provided him with a board of directors, he left the company in 1902 and initially traded raw tobacco.

In 1908 Jasmatzi started manufacturing cigarette machines and with his own factory the production of cigarette tubes. After his contractual obligation not to operate his own cigarette production, he finally founded the company Georg Jasmatzi & Sons (Georg A. Jasmatzi and Sons) with his sons Anton Gustav Jasmatzi and Konstantin Jasmatzi in 1911 with the brands August der Starke , JAS and Kleine JAS . Georg Anton Jasmatzi died in 1922 and was buried in the Tolkewitz Johannisfriedhof .

Georg Jasmatzi is considered to be

“... founder of the Dresden cigarette industry, which was operated by numerous large and small companies until the Second World War . In 1929 Saxony had a tobacco tax revenue of 250 million Reichsmarks . [... Thanks to Jasmatzi] Dresden became one of the largest storage areas for oriental tobacco and at the same time a location for the cigarette machine industry. "

Jasmatzi AG and Georg Jasmatzi & Sons were nationalized after 1945 to form VEB Jasmatzi .
