Georg Asmussen

Georg Asmussen (born May 14, 1856 in Pommerby ; † December 30, 1933 in Westerholz , Schleswig-Holstein ) was a German engineer, writer and good templar .

His father was a teacher in Pommerby and took his own life when Georg Asmussen was 9 years old. He grew up in great poverty in Nieby , received private lessons in Gelting and later switched to the cathedral school in Schleswig . In 1872 he dropped out of school and completed a mechanical engineering apprenticeship in Eckernförde . After his voluntary military service, he went on to study engineering at the Polytechnic in Langensalza and then went back to his teaching company. In 1885 he started at Blohm & Voss in Hamburg , where he quickly became a senior engineer. He managed the expansion of the shipyard, represented the company at the world exhibitions in Paris (1900) and St. Louis (1904) and took on foreign contracts in Glasgow , Saint Petersburg and Constantinople .

In 1911 he took early retirement for health reasons and only worked temporarily as a consultant worldwide. He retired to Westerholz and from then on devoted himself entirely to writing.

Asmussen fought against alcohol throughout his life . In 1893 he joined the Guttempler movement and in the same year founded a Guttempler Lodge in Hamburg . In 1894 he took over the chairmanship of the German Good Templar Order for five years, he was also editor of the association magazine "Deutscher Guttempler" for 17 years and in 1895 published the first Good Templar songbook.

In Gelting, in the office of his birthplace Pommerby, the village community school and a kindergarten are named after him.
