Georg Biermann

Georg Biermann (born July 7, 1880 in Cologne , † April 3, 1949 in Pullach near Munich ) was a German art historian and publisher .

Life

Georg Biermann, son of the businessman Otto Biermann, studied history in Marburg, Berlin and Rostock after graduating from high school at the humanistic grammar school in 1898 and received his doctorate in Rostock in 1901. 1901 to 1903 he spent in Florence as a teacher at the art academy. In 1904 he did his military service in Germany. In 1907 he founded the Klinkhardt & Biermann publishing house in Leipzig with Werner Klinkhardt (1882–1926) . In the publishing house, which was specialized in arts and crafts, the magazines Monthly for Art History (1908-1920) and Cicerone appeared. Bi-monthly publication for artists, art lovers and collectors (1909–1932), whose publisher was Biermann. From 1912 to 1917 he was artistic advisor to Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig von Hessen in Darmstadt ; this also appointed him professor. He came into contact with Heinrich Tramm , city director of Hanover , whose advisor on art issues he was. From 1917 to 1920 he lived in Hanover, where he was head of the municipal war collection . From 1920 to 1921 he was President of the Kestner Society . From 1920 he lived in Bavaria and worked as an author and editor of art historical writings and magazines. From 1946 he was head of the art department of the Kurt Desch publishing house .
