Georg Eduard Luiga (* February 15 . Jul / 27. February 1866 greg. In Valgjärve ; † 20th March 1936 in Tallinn ) was an Estonian writer and journalist.
Life
Georg Eduard Luiga went to school in Kanepi and was a teacher in the parish of Äksi from 1887 to 1890 . After a short period as a journalist for the Olevik newspaper , he was a teacher in Estonian settlements in Russia, first in Smorodino, Simbirsk Governorate (1891–1895), and later in Tobolsk Governorate (1895–1901). After his return to Estonia he worked for various newspapers and in 1908 took up the position of editor-in-chief at Päevaleht . He remained in this position until the end of 1934, and under his aegis it became Estonia's largest newspaper during the interwar period.
plant
Luiga started making up stories when he was ten or eleven because he didn't have enough reading material. He published his first poems in newspapers and magazines from 1881. In 1886 he published his first collection of stories that romanticized the prehistory of the Estonians ( The Maiden of the Grass ). This was followed by further volumes of short stories and two volumes of poetry, which were judged cautiously. But some of his poems have been set to music and have thus withstood the ravages of time.
His descriptions from Siberia met with a more positive response. August Kitzberg complained in his laudatory review of In the Land of Violence that most people with literary talent were unfortunately lost to the press. Luiga also wrote numerous popular science books and song collections.
Translations into German
There are five of his poems in German in Wilhelm Nerling's anthology.
