The municipality of Himmelwitz ( Gmina Jemielnica in Polish ) is a rural municipality in the Powiat Strzelecki of the Opole Voivodeship in Poland . Their seat is the village of the same name with about 3500 inhabitants.
Since 2006 the community has been officially bilingual (Polish and German).
geography
The rural community borders on the area of the district town Strzelce Opolskie (Groß Strehlitz) , it is 40 kilometers southeast of Opole (Opole) and 40 kilometers northwest of Gliwice (Gliwice) . The neighboring communities are Kolonowskie / Colonnowska , Strzelce Opolskie , Wielowieś (Langendorf) and Zawadzkie (Zawadzki) .
36 percent of the municipal area is used for agriculture and 61 percent for forestry.
history
According to the 2002 census, there were 7702 inhabitants in the community of Himmelwitz. Of these, 4091 inhabitants (53.1%) stated their Polish nationality. 2515 people (32.7%) stated another nationality. Including: 1871 inhabitants (24.3%) with German nationality and 627 (8.1%) with the unrecognized Silesian nationality. 14.2% of the population (1096 inhabitants) did not state any nationality in the survey.
On August 28, 2006, German was introduced as the second official language in the community of Himmelwitz, and German place names were introduced on November 14, 2008. Two years later, bilingual place-name signs were put up in October 2010.

Stands at the head of the administrative council chairman . Since 2018, this has been Marcin Wycisło from the German Minority Election Committee , who replaced the long-time incumbent Joachim Jelito, who did not run again. Wycisło was the only candidate and received 90.7% of the vote.
Municipal council
The municipal council consists of 15 members and is directly elected. The 2018 municipal council election led to the following result:
- German minority election committee 48.3% of the votes, 13 seats
- Community of voters of the village Gąsiorowice and the surrounding area 51.7% of the vote, 2 seats
Note: The percentage of votes held by the German minority is so low compared to the number of seats that in ten of the 15 electoral districts their candidates were given their seats due to the lack of opposing candidates without an election and thus without votes.

The rural community of Himmelwitz (gmina wiejska) covers an area of 113.2 km² with about 7200 inhabitants. It is divided into seven villages with school boards :

- Wierschlesche / Wierchlesie ( 1936–1945 Hohenwalde )
In addition, the community includes the settlements: Graniczny, Miłosna, Redwina and Zielona, which are assigned to the school authorities.
