Georg Friedel (journalist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Georg Friedel (born March 31, 1920 in Munich ; † July 23, 2011 there ) was a German journalist and television editor . He was best known for his sensitive documentaries for Süddeutscher Rundfunk (SDR) and Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR).

Life

Georg Friedel was born in Munich's Schillerstraße 37, 4th floor (today, after the renumbering in the 1950s, Schillerstraße 20) as the son of the saddler Max Friedel. He completed his education at the elementary school on Schwanthalerstraße in Munich and began an apprenticeship in a freight forwarding company. During his school days in the 1920s, he set a unique cinematic monument: An elementary school class in the 1920s - attempt at a reconstruction (1969). Walter Jens wrote about this film in 1970 in the ZEIT : "But the one who was reciting his memories with Bavarian-guttural intonation, Georg Friedel from Munich, did not even bother with poetry and elegiac evocations, instead he talked cheerfully and spoke so vividly. vividly that even actuarial phrases like the latter sounded less like registration authorities than like Karl Valentin. "

After military service and imprisonment until 1949, Georg Friedel worked in the field of fashion magazines and as the publishing director of a program magazine.

Career as a television editor

In 1954 Georg Friedel switched to SDR as editor. In what was then the new medium of television, he initially directed images for soccer matches, directed the Peter Frankenfeld shows and worked as a production manager .

In the period that followed, he worked closely with Dieter Ertel , one of the co-founders of the Stuttgart Documentary Film School. First he conducted the interviews in his very own sensitive way and later took over the coregie with Dieter Ertl in a series of documentaries that are today among the classics of the genre: New building miracles (1959, interviews), Congress of Ideals, observations at a vegetarian Meetings (1959, interviews), shooting festival near the train station - observations in the village (1961, together with Dieter Ertel), six-day races. Observations in the Berlin Sports Palace, (1964, together with Dieter Ertel).

His first own films are based on his “typical and inimitable word squabbles”: Therese Giehse Portrait of an Actress (1964), Dr. Hildegard Hamm-Brücher- Sketches for a Portrait of the Modern Woman (1967), Festtage on the Autobahn. Observations in Road Traffic (1968).

In 1967 he switched to Bayerischer Rundfunk as a freelancer. A series of documentaries about his hometown Munich and Bavaria were created there: Munich Jews. Childhood, Persecution and Return (1972), Munich resistance fighters report, There was not only July 20th (1974), Schillerstr. 3-53 (1977), Wiener Platz stop (1978), Ein Tag am Stachus (1979).

His films from the 1970s in particular show an impressive picture of Munich from the time before gentrification . At the end of his career, Georg Friedel shot an eight-part long-term observation of a senior year of secondary school on Bergmannstrasse in Munich's Westend .
