George III from Ortenburg

George III von Ortenburg (* 1473 ; † May 7, 1553 in Freising ) was the third son of Count Sebastian I. von Ortenburg and Maria von Neuburg . He came from the wealthy and influential Lower Bavarian noble house of Ortenburg . His high descent enabled him to hold numerous church offices. Together with his brothers, his cousin and his nephews, Georg played a major role in the rise of his family in Bavaria.

George III was born as the third of 13 children of Count Sebastian I. von Ortenburg and Maria von Neuburg. The numerous children made it possible for the Ortenburg family to regain an incomparable rapid rise in the Bavarian nobility. His brothers Ulrich II. And Christoph acquired extensive possessions, Christoph, like their nephew Moritz, obtained high political offices in the Duchy of Bavaria -Munich and the later united Duchy of Bavaria. Her cousin Wolfgang achieved great influence in the Duchy of Bavaria-Straubing . Together with Georg's financial support and political influence, it enabled the noble house of Ortenburg to gain enormous power, influence and wealth. After 1502 he appears as provost to Madern near Flintsbach am Inn . On December 9, 1505, he appeared as the priest of St. Laurentius in Steinkirchen . With that he returned to his homeland. St. Laurentius was the parish church of the imperial county of Ortenburg and numerous branch churches . Historians have long suspected that George III. the place Steinkirchen and church came under the sovereignty of the Counts of Ortenburg. However, documents from 1404 show that this was the case centuries earlier.

In 1506 Georg was invited by the Roman-German King and later Emperor Maximilian I to take part in the deliberations of the Reichstag in Constance. On July 29, 1510, George III. as Canon of Augsburg . Just a year later he became Provost of Freising. In favor of his nephew Alexander, Georg renounced the benefice of Augsburg on June 2, 1518. Around the year 1536 George III. also Canon of Salzburg . On August 31, 1548, he renounced this canon benefice in favor of his great-nephew Ulrich III.

The Roman-German Emperor Charles V appointed George III. together with his brother Sebastian II on April 28, 1551 on the imperial council.

At the beginning of 1553 he finally renounced the benefice as pastor of Steinkirchen. Shortly afterwards, on May 7th, Georg III died. at the old age of 80 in Freising. He was not buried in the Ortenburg hereditary burial in the Sixtus Chapel at Passau Cathedral , but was buried in the St. George's Chapel in the Freising Cathedral monastery. At his request, a memorial stone was placed on the wall above his grave.
