Georg Körner , later George Körner , but also Georg Körner, (born November 28, 1717 in Pölbitz , † May 3, 1772 in Bockau ) was a German pastor, linguist and chronicler.

Life

Körner was born in Pölbitz near Zwickau in 1717 as the son of the farmer and village judge Zacharias Körner . From 1722 to 1729 he attended the St. Moritz school in Zwickau and then the city's Latin school . Already in this phase of his training he began linguistic studies by studying Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Chaldean, Syriac, French and Italian and also learning self-taught Czech, Sorbian and Polish. On June 23, 1739, Körner began studying theology in Leipzig . In the same year he became a member of the Wendish College of Preachers . He finished his studies in Leipzig with a “Magister of Philosophy”.

In 1742 he took over the office of Electoral Saxon field preacher. In 1744 he became a deacon in Reichenbach. At the Second Silesian War he took as from 23 June 1745 electoral Saxon part chaplain in Chursächsische Regiment walk from Romans. After the end of the war, he helped out as a pastor in various places in Dresden and Lusatia until he was appointed pastor in the Erzgebirge village of Bockau in 1747 .

In addition to the spiritual care of the parish entrusted to him, he devoted himself in particular to scientific research into the Sorbian language . His Sorbian-German dictionary is a lasting testimony to his work. The extensive handwritten manuscript was published in 1979/80 by Reinhold Olesch as a facsimile print in 5 individual volumes.

In addition to his language research, Körner devoted himself to the local history of Bockau and its immediate surroundings. He wrote u. a. an extensive chronicle entitled Old and New News from the mountain village of Bockau . The Bockauer Nachrichten that he had started was continued by his successors in the parish office until 1936. Körner was married to Juliana Friederika Christliebe Schindler from Schneeberg since 1755. The marriage remained childless. Körner died in the famine year of 1772 in Bockau, his widow died in 1813 with her sister in Markersbach .
