Georg Stern (* 1921 in Darmstadt ; † July 17, 1980 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German opera singer ( bass ).

Life

Stern began his artistic career in Frankfurt am Main. From 1946 to 1949 he was a member of the ensemble at the Staatstheater Darmstadt , then from 1949 to 1956 at the Staatstheater Wiesbaden . From 1956 he was a permanent member of the ensemble at the Frankfurt Opera until his death , only interrupted by a short stop at the Cologne Opera (1960–1962). In 1964 he took part in the premiere of the opera Dame Kobold by Gerhard Wimberger in Frankfurt . In the 1965/66 season he sang the "arrogant and embarrassed gesticulating" ad editor at the Frankfurt opera in the first performance of the opera Die Nase by Dmitri Shostakovich .

Stern became known in particular for his embodiment of the bass roles in Richard Wagner's music dramas : Daland in Der Fliegende Holländer , Biterolf in Tannhäuser , Veit Pogner in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg , König Marke in Tristan and Isolde and Klingsor in Parsifal .

In 1952 he sang Klingsor at the Zurich Opera House . In 1956 he appeared at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels as Figaro in Mozart's opera Le nozze di Figaro . Stern appeared several times at the Salzburg Festival : 1957/1958 as Bartolo in Le nozze di Figaro , 1958 as Count Dominik in Arabella and 1964/1965 as Truffaldin in Ariadne on Naxos . As a member of the Cologne Opera ensemble, he sang the leporello in the production of Mozart's opera Don Giovanni, which premiered on March 20, 1960 . In 1960 he sang Klingsor at La Scala in Milan . Stern also made guest appearances with this role at the Teatro San Carlo (1960, 1967), at the Rome Opera House (1963), at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna (1963), at the Deutsche Oper Berlin (1967) and at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice (1970) ). In 1974 he sang the role of Grand Inquisitor in Verdi's opera Don Carlo in The Hague .

Stern also appeared extensively as a concert singer (guest performance in Paris in 1972) and as a song interpreter. He was also seen on television ( Vom First Das Beste , 1965). On February 10, 1968, he appeared as a guest on the television show One Will Win .

Stern lived in Niedernhausen in the Taunus .

Audio documents

Stern's voice has been recorded on numerous audio documents. For Deutsche Grammophon he played Biterolf in a complete recording of Tannhäuser and Pater Guardian in a cross-section of the opera Die Macht des Schicksals . The recently rediscovered live recording of the Don Giovanni premiere in Cologne was also edited and restored by Deutsche Grammophon. In 1956 he worked in Frankfurt as Veit Pogner in a live recording of the Wagner opera Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg .

In the 1950s, Georg Stern also made several radio recordings of operas and operettas at Hessischer Rundfunk . He sang in complete recordings, among others, the Kezal in The Bartered Bride (1953) and Ollendorff in The Begging Student (1952).

He also recorded seafaring songs such as Between Shanghai and St. Pauli , Once Upon a Time to Bombay and When the Schifferklavier aboard sounds on record . He is also represented on the CD Rolling Home-Shanties & Seemannslieder with a musical contribution.
