Georg Vorhauer (born November 4, 1903 in Paris , † September 13, 1987 in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse ) was a German painter , draftsman and sculptor .

life and work

In 1905 the family moved from Paris, where his father, a Munich cabinet maker, was working, to Speyer . In 1917 Vorhauer started his apprenticeship with a lithographer, then he learned - from his father - the carpenter's trade, up to the master craftsman's certificate as a cabinet maker in 1929. The following year he began his studies at the Free Academy in Mannheim, in 1931 he switched to the Karlsruhe Academy and became a student of Albert Haueisen . When he resigned his professorship for political reasons, Vorhauer became his assistant and (private) master student in Jockgrim / Palatinate. In 1936 Vorhauer was invited to study at the Berlin Academy; he studied wall painting with Kurt Wehlte . The following year, he received his first public contract as the winner of a competition: a mural using the sgraffito technique in a swimming pool in Berlin-Zehlendorf . In 1937 Vorhauer settled in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse and received other public contracts. Drafted for military service in 1939, he did not return from captivity in France until 1948. Vorhauer was a founding member of the Palatinate Artists 'Cooperative in 1953 and of the Rhein-Neckar Artists' Association in 1963.

Vorhauer created paintings, graphics and sculptures. After beginning in the area of late impressionism, Vorhauer, inspired by the Dutch group De Stijl , the Cubists and the Ecole de Paris, turned to large-scale painting and sculpture, which emerged in both concrete and abstract form and, from the 1970s, through bright colors is marked. Vorhauer only found his way into sculpture in the 1960s - on an autodidactic path. For state, municipal and church buildings, he created wall and floor designs, mosaics and reliefs made of wood, stone, marble and copper, often large-scale and rhythmically structured. Examples include a 50 square meter mural made of wood and glass mosaic with gold for the small hall of the city hall in Speyer or the almost 24.5 square meter wooden wall relief on the front of the meeting room of the regional finance office in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse. His free sculptures are often interspersed with perspectives, biomorphic-vegetative, wall-like or stele-like structures, symbols of becoming and growing; his preferred working materials were concrete and aluminum.

"These wildly jagged relief walls with their cracks, abysses and depths are landscapes of meditative fascination; its columns, steles and obelisk-like sculptures are strictly ordered materializations of musical compositional laws: fugues and preludes."
