Life

Wehrung was born as the son of a Lutheran primary school teacher in Dorlisheim in Lower Alsace and was strongly influenced by Lutheran piety in his youth. Already in his first semester he became a member of the Wingolf Association Argentina to Strasbourg. He completed his theology studies in the fall of 1904 by taking a university exam. He then studied philosophy for one semester each in Berlin and Jena. In 1906 he became head of the Kollegium Wilhelmitanum in Strasbourg as the successor to Albert Schweitzer , which enabled him to continue his philosophical studies.

In 1913 he accepted a pastor's post in Hunawihr . In November 1915 he was appointed associate professor at the University of Strasbourg. In April 1920 he became full professor for systematic theology at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster. In the same year he also became a member of the Munster Wingolf. In the summer semester of 1927 he moved to the theological faculty of the University of Halle and in the summer semester of 1931 to Tübingen . In 1946 he was dismissed against his will, but taught until 1953. In the post-war period, he stood up for the early peace movement at the side of Martin Niemöller .

The soprano and university professor Herrad Wehrung was his daughter.
