Georg Wilhelm Lafontaine was the time of the Electorate of Brunswick-Lüneburg in the former residence of born Celle, where his father, from France coming Huguenot Sieur Jacques de La Fontaine (buried July 1, 1732 "uf the Neuenhäusener churchyard ") as Gobelinwirker and Hoftapezier for Duke Georg Wilhelm and Eleonore d'Olbreuse was active.

Presumably Georg Wilhelm Lafontaine helped his father together with his brother as "contrefaitre", as wallpapering of the Electorate of Hanover chateau Schloss Gifhorn and the hunting lodge Göhrde .

Lafontaine's eldest daughter Sophie Eleonore Wilhelmine Lafontaine (* 1701 in Celle; † 1764 in Hanover) married the painter Johann Franz Lüders before 1729 .

After the beginning of the personal union between Great Britain and Hanover , Lafontaine temporarily followed his sovereign and worked from 1726 to 1730 in London , but also in Holland . In 1730, Lafontaine was promoted to Hanoverian court painter by King George II, succeeding Tomaso Giusti . He died in Hanover in 1745.
