George Noakes (born September 13, 1924 in Bwlch-llan , Cardiganshire , † July 14, 2008 in Carmarthen , Carmarthenshire ) was an Anglican bishop and primate of the Church in Wales .

Noakes was born in Bwlch-llan, Cardiganshire, in September 1924. He grew up in a bilingual family, which was unusual at the time. His father was from South Pembrokeshire and spoke English, while his mother was deeply rooted in the Welsh-speaking community. This bilingualism was to be of great use to him later in life.

After completing his education, when the Second World War drew to a close, Noakes joined the Royal Air Force and became, after his training in Canada , during the last months of World War II part of the air crew of the Royal Air Force. After the fighting ended, Noakes left the Royal Air Force and went to University College Wales in Aberystwyth , where he studied philosophy. After his graduation he prepared in Wycliffe Hall , Oxford for his ordination before. Noakes was a curate in Lampeter for six years, from 1950 to 1956, then was vicar at Eglwyswrw in Pembrokeshire from 1956 to 1959 , and then returned to Cardiganshire, where he was vicar of Tregaron from 1959 to 1967 .

In 1967 Noakes became Vicar of Eglwys Dewi Sant , a Welsh-speaking church in Cardiff . As a chaplain, he also looked after the Welsh-speaking inmates of Cardiffer Prison. After nine years as Vicar of Eglwys Dewi Sant , he returned in 1976 in the diocese of St Davids , where he grew up, and became from 1976 to 1979 Rector of Aberystwyth, 1977-1979 canons of St David's Cathedral , and finally from 1979 to 1982 Archdeacon of Cardigan . In addition, he served as Vicar of Llanychaearn from 1980 to 1982.

In 1981 he was elected Bishop of St Davids and received his episcopal ordination in 1982. In 1987 he was elected Archbishop of Wales. Noakes resigned as archbishop in 1991 due to the high burden of his two episcopal offices and a heart attack. He remained Bishop of St Davids until 1995.

Noakes was a member of the Gorsedd of Bards and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Wales in 1989 . Noakes had been married since 1957.
