Georges River from East Hills

The Georges River is a river in the east of the Australian state of New South Wales .

geography

It rises in the southwest of Sydney , about five kilometers southeast of the coal mining town of Appin and about five kilometers northwest of Lake Cataract . The river first flows north through Campbelltown , roughly parallel to the Main Southern Railway . In Liverpool it turns its course to the east and flows through Sydney's suburbs East Hills , Lugarno , Bangor and Blakehurst . At Taren Point it flows into Botany Bay and thus into the Tasman Sea . The Liverpool Weir now marks the limit for salt water entering the river from the sea.

Upper course

The Georges River rises in the heathland of the Wollondilly Shire near Appin. The river flows north through wild sandstone gorges to the southern limit of Sydney's urban development in Glenfield . Then his run takes him on to Liverpool Weir, where it merges into the estuary of the lower reaches. The catchment area of the upper reaches is about 360 km² and is located in the Local Government Areas Wollondilly , Campbelltown and Liverpool .

The bushland along the river is one of the most pristine vegetation in the western part of the city. From Appin to Glenfield, a wide corridor has been protected as part of the Georges River Regional Open Space Corridor, Simmo's Beach Recreation Reserve , Ingleburn Reserve , Keith Longhurst Reserve, and Frere's Crossing Reserve . All of these protected areas are open to the public.

In February 2007, the Campbelltown City and Liverpool City LGAs received AU $ 2 million from the New South Wales Environment Trust as part of their Urban Sustainability Initiative . This sum of money should give the two LGAs, together with the Wollondilly Shire and the Georges River Combined Councils Committee, the opportunity to develop a joint strategy for the preservation and restoration of the river's catchment area.

history

The Georges River was named by Governor Arthur Phillip after King George III. of Great Britain and Ireland

In 1795 the river was explored by George Bass and Matthew Flinders on their voyage on the Clay Thumb after their arrival in New South Wales. Their expedition led to the establishment of Bankstown .

In 1836, with the help of convicts , David Lennox built a dam in Liverpool, the Liverpool Weir . The reservoir was used to supply Liverpool with drinking water.

Recreational use

The Georges River is popular for recreational activities such as water skiing and swimming. The banks on the lower reaches have many bays, which are bordered by sandstone cliffs and hills. Many expensive residential properties are built on it.

Fishing

The Georges River is a popular fishing water. You can find bream , whiting , yellowtail , jewfish ( Argyrosomus japonicus ) and flat heads there . There are also several commercial oyster farms on the river . On the upper reaches you can find many perch in summer, which then migrate to the brackish lower reaches in winter to spawn there. The inflow of sewage is carefully regulated in order to preserve the habitat in the estuary .
