Georges Santer
Georges Santer (born December 6, 1952 ) is a Luxembourg diplomat . He was ambassador to Berlin from 2012 to 2017 .
Life
Santer studied history and German at the University of Vienna with a degree in philosophy (1978), plus a diploma from the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna . In 1980 Santer entered the diplomatic service and until 1991 held various positions in the Luxembourg Foreign Ministry and the diplomatic missions of the Grand Duchy , including from July to December 1988 as chargé d'affaires in Madrid .
In December 1991 he was appointed ambassador to Beijing , and from February 1994 he was also accredited to Vietnam (based in Beijing). In 1995 he was transferred to Vienna , as ambassador to Austria , Hungary and Slovenia , and as permanent representative to the OSCE , the IAEA , the UNIDO and the United Nations Office in Vienna .
From September 2002 as Secretary General in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs , from 2002 to 2007 he was chairman of an inter-ministerial committee for the establishment of European institutions and authorities in Luxembourg, and from December 2004 ambassador to the Holy See (only with office in Luxembourg , from September 2007 until December 2008 in Paris ). In September 2007 he was appointed ambassador to France , from November 2008 also accredited in the Principality of Monaco (with headquarters in Paris), as well as permanent representative to the OECD and UNESCO . From September 2012 to September 2017, Santer was Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany based in Berlin and Luxembourg's non-resident ambassador in Croatia .
Awards
- In 2002 he received the Grand Decoration of Honor in Gold on Ribbon for Services to the Republic of Austria .
