The Georgskopf is a 3090  m above sea level. A. high mountain peaks of the Schober group in Carinthia ( Spittal an der Drau district ). It was first climbed on July 31, 1890 by Ludwig Purtscheller .

location

The Georgskopf is located in the east of the Schobergruppe in the core zone of the Hohe Tauern National Park on the municipality border between Großkirchheim in the northwest and Mörtschach in the southeast. The summit lies between the Petzeck ( 3283  m above sea level ) in the southwest and the Großer Friedrichskopf ( 3134  m above sea level ) in the northeast. The Georgskopf is separated from the Petzeck by the Georgsscharte ( 2886  m above sea level ), the transition to the Friedrichskopf is marked by the Friedrichsscharte ( 2764  m above sea level ). The Georgskopf consists of the main summit and the western summit in front. Its long northeast ridge drops into the valley of the Gradenbach , to the south lies the Pritischkar and the Pritischkees with several small mountain lakes that feed the Pritischbach .

Promotion opportunities

The normal route to the Georgskopf starts at the Wangenitzseehütte . From here you follow the path down to the Schaflerhütte and then climb north over steep mountain mats to the Obere Prititschscharte. This is followed by the descent into the Prititschkar and the ascent into the Georgsscharte. The long final ascent over the southwest ridge requires advanced climbing experience ( III ).

There are also various other options for climbing the Georgskopf. The route over the southeast ridge is rarely used due to the fragile rock ( III ). The southern separating gorge between the west and main summit presents a risk of falling rocks starting from the Prititschkar, and Grundis also makes climbing difficult ( III ). The routes over the northeast ridge ( IV + ) and the northwest ridge ( IV- ) are even more difficult .
