Gerard Sandifort

Gerard Sandifort (born January 31, 1779 in Leiden ; † November 5, 1848 there ) was a Dutch medic.

Life

Gerard Sandifort was the son of Eduard Sandifort and Catharina Johanna Kindeed. He had received his first training from his father. At the age of thirteen, his father had given him the qualification to design medical specimens and anatomical drawings. After attending the medical lectures at the Leiden University in 1793, he was enrolled on February 8, 1799 in the matriculation of the University of Leiden. Here he attended the lectures of Nicolaus Georgius Oosterdijk , Meinard Simon du Pui , Nicolaas Paradijs and Sebald Justinus Brugmans, among others . On February 8, 1799 he was employed as a prosector of the anatomical theater and worked as his father's assistant. On January 31, 1801 he received an honorary doctorate in medicine from the Senate of the Leiden University and on February 2 of that year he was appointed associate professor, for which he gave the speech de Accuratioris et subtilioris anatomes studi .

On March 29, 1805 he took over the anatomy lectures of his father, was appointed professor of medicine, anatomy and surgery together with his father on November 4, 1807 and took over the sole chair of this subject on July 6, 1812. When the Leiden University was closed after a short period, he was confirmed in his professorship by royal resolution when it was reorganized on October 16, 1815. After the death of Brugmanns, Sandifort was interim director of the Hortus Botanicus in Leiden until Kaspar Georg Karl Reinwardt took over this task properly. For the Hortus he published a catalog of the same, which appeared under the title Elenchus plantarum quae in horto Lugduno-Batavo coluntur and contained 5081 descriptions of the garden's plants.

In 1822 he was accepted into the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . His academic nickname was Scarpa I.

In his capacity as a university lecturer in Leiden, he also took on organizational tasks at the Dutch university. He was rector of the Alma Mater in 1824/25 and 1844/45 . At the resignation of the offices he gave the speeches Oratio de Prosperis et adversis, quae huic Academiae post celebratum diem natalis ducentesimum evenerunt (1825) and the unprinted Oratio de Sebaldo Justino Brugmans, pracelaro naturae interprete . He was also a member of several learned societies of his time. So here would be his membership in the society of observing and industrious mathematics, building, nature and drawing (Dutch: Maatschappij der Beschouwende en Werkdaadige Wis-, Bouw-, Natuur- en Teekenkunde ), which took place on February 2, 1802 sponsoring membership in the provincial Utrecht Society of Arts and Sciences (Dutch: Provinciaal Utrechtsch Genootschap van Kunsten en Wetenschappen ), his 1808 membership in the Dutch Society of Sciences in Haarlem (Dutch: Hollandsche Maatschappij der Wetenschappen ) and his on May 11, 1819 successful membership at the Royal Institute of Science in Amsterdam .
