Gerd Baier

Gerd-Rainer Baier (born June 25, 1924 in Dresden ; † June 13, 2017 in Schwerin ) was a German art historian and monument conservator .

Life

Born in Dresden, Gerd Baier attended the Rudolf Steiner School there , which was closed in 1941, and graduated from high school in 1942. After participating in the war and being a prisoner of war, he worked for a short time in the school service and studied art history and classical archeology at the University of Leipzig from 1950 to 1954 . In the following years, Baier was significantly involved in the creation of the inventory of monuments for the island of Rügen , which was carried out under Walter Ohle . When the Schwerin branch of the Institute for the Preservation of Monuments of the German Democratic Republic was set up on March 1, 1956 , Gerd Baier was one of the first employees. He was later appointed Head of the Research and Documentation Department as Chief Conservator, a position he held until his retirement in 1995. In 1959, Gerd-Rainer Baier received his doctorate with his dissertation: Medieval wall and vault painting in Mecklenburg at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Leipzig.

Gerd Baier lived with his wife in Schwerin.

Gerd Baier is the author of numerous publications on the history of art and the preservation of monuments in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, a list of his writings from 1957 to 1989 can be found in the communications of the Institute for Preservation of Monuments - Arbeitsstelle Schwerin , No. 33/1989, pp. 805–808, afterwards appeared among others:
