Gerhard Friedrich Ernst Herrmann (born August 17, 1913 in Wertheim ; † February 10, 2003 in Bonn ) was a German lawyer , poet , translator and author .

Life

Gerd Herrmann was the second child of Wilhelmine and Bernhard Herrmann, who worked as a domain councilor for Prince Löwenstein zu Wertheim-Freudenberg . After graduating from high school, Herrmann studied law in Tübingen and Berlin . In Berlin he made friends with Ulrich Hollaender , who called himself "Michael Thomas" as a British officer, with Billy Hildesheimer , who later called himself William Hilsley , and with Wolfgang Osthoff .

Gerd Herrmann was committed to the Reich Labor Service in 1938 , and he participated in the war as an officer in the Air Force until 1945.

During his stationing in Greece he made friends with Odysseas Elytis , who later won the Greek Nobel Prize for Literature (1979). During this time I wrote my first own poems on Crete. After the war Herrmann was promoted to Dr. iur. doctorate with a dissertation on non-material damage. In Tübingen and Bonn he met Carlo Schmid and was friends with Johann Christian Lankes , Rolf-Dietrich Keil and Otto Weerth. From 1948 he worked as a trainee lawyer in Tübingen, from 1949 in Bonn as a government advisor in the Federal Ministry of Transport, Railway Department, later as Ministerialrat in the Road Traffic department as Head of Unit until 1978.

Herrmann was for several Federal Transport Ministers, u. a. ghostwriter for Georg Leber , Lauritz Lauritzen and Kurt Gscheidle and participates in national and international committees for road safety: German Road Safety Council , OECD , ADAC , Björn Steiger Foundation .

Gerd Herrmann wrote numerous poems of his own, translated English, American, Greek and French poems, and submitted a translation of Horace's letters and satires . This new translation of the works of the Roman poet in hexameters captures Horace's speech rhythm and gives an idea of ​​the language of the original text.
