After graduating from the Realgymnasium Aachen , Heusch studied law at the universities in Bonn and Munich, where he was a member of the Catholic student association KStV Rheno-Bavaria Munich, and was taken on there in 1924 as a court trainee. At the University of Cologne, Heusch received his doctorate on February 11, 1927 with his dissertation: The Aachen Constitutional Struggles from 1786 to 1792. Subsequently, he was appointed court assessor, but already in 1928 settled as a lawyer in Aachen. Two years later, like his father and brother, he became a member of Club Aachener Casino .

During the Second World War , Heusch served temporarily as a war administrator . After Aachen was taken by the Americans in October 1944, Heusch was one of the nine selected citizens, along with Edmund Sinn , Hans Schwippert , Kurt Pfeiffer and others, who were appointed and installed by the American military government as the civil interim government and all of whom call themselves “mayors” were allowed to. Under the leadership of the also appointed Lord Mayor Franz Oppenhoff , Heusch was responsible for work and welfare from November 1944 to March 1945. As a lawyer in 1947 he represented Quirin Jansen, the former Nazi mayor of Aachen, who had been accused before a British military court.

After Gerd Heusch had already taken on a leading position in the Talbot wagon factory in 1943 , he later rose to become a partner and was a commercial director on the management board for many years. He also sat on the supervisory board of Aachener Tuchfabrik AG.

In addition to his professional obligations, Heusch was mainly involved in the sports sector. He was a member and long-term chairman of the Aachener Hockeyclub 1906 eV as well as a member of the soccer club Alemannia Aachen, which he headed from 1956 to 1966 as president. During his term of office, among other things, the planning for the introduction of the Bundesliga in 1962 fell. Heusch submitted a 12-point catalog for the inclusion of Alemannias in the new league, in which he, among other things, on the orderly economic situation, the planned stadium expansion for 42,000 spectators, the uninterrupted membership in the Oberliga West and the fact that the club is the largest lawn sports club in North Rhine-Westphalia pointed out. However, the application for membership in Alemannia was not approved and subsequent protests did not change this decision.

For his work at Alemannia Aachen, Heusch was awarded the golden pin of honor with diamonds in 1966 and was made an honorary member in 1980. In addition, Heusch was awarded the Great Federal Cross of Merit for his lifetime achievement .

Gerd Heusch was married to Elisabeth Lambotte (1902–1984) and had several children with her, of whom the daughters Ilse and Gerda died in the battle of Aachen at the age of 13 and 14 years. The Gerd Heusch family found their final resting place in the family crypt in Aachen's Ostfriedhof .
