Gerd Steinwascher

Gerd Steinwascher (born August 1, 1953 in Engelskirchen ) is a German historian and archivist .

Gerd Steinwascher studied history and political science at the Philipps University of Marburg from 1972 to 1977 . In 1977 he passed the state examination. From 1977 to 1981 he was a research assistant in Marburg in the DFG project The Origin of European Nations in the Middle Ages . He received his doctorate in 1981 in Marburg with a thesis on the Cistercian town courts in Cologne, supervised by Reinhard Schneider . From 1981 to 1983 he was an archive trainee for the state of Lower Saxony. From 1983 to 1989 he was archivist / archivist at the Lower Saxony State Archives in Bückeburg , then from 1989 to 2002 archivist / archivist at the Osnabrück State Archives . From 2002 to October 2018 he was chief archive director at the Lower Saxony State Archive - Oldenburg location . In 2005 he received the cultural promotion award of the Landschaftsverband Osnabrücker Land eV In 2007 he was appointed honorary professor at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg .

His main research interests are the history of Lower Saxony , especially Oldenburg , Osnabrück and Schaumburg . In 2006 Steinwascher published a history of the city of Osnabrück. The published volume is divided into 11 chapters. Ten authors describe the history from the first traces of settlement to the present day. The last comprehensive account of Osnabrück came from Ludwig Hoffmeyer . The sixth edition of Hoffmeyer's work was published in 1995, but dates back to 1918. In 2011 Steinwascher presented an authoritative overview of the Oldenburg family . Steinwascher is a member of the historical commission for Lower Saxony and Bremen (since 1986, deputy chairman since 2016) and the historical commission for Westphalia (full member from 1994 to 2006, corresponding member since 2006). From 1992 to 2002 he was chairman of the Association for History and Regional Studies of Osnabrück and in this function published the Osnabrücker Mitteilungen from 1992 to 2001 . From 2007 to 2018 he was editor-in-chief for the history section of the Oldenburg yearbook. Together with Dietmar von Reeken , he has been the head of the Working Group on the State and Regional History of the Oldenburg Landscape since 2013 .
