The name comes from old Icelandic and roughly means the protector . The name actually means enclosure or protective fence . The name first appeared in Germany in the 19th century, incorrectly also as an abbreviation for the figure of Gertrude in Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale " The Snow Queen" . Back then it was considered modern and new, today it is chosen less often.
