history

The place was first mentioned in 1156 as a castle, about which the Bishop of Volterra , Galgano Pannocchieschi, was in dispute with his brother, Ranieri Pannocchieschi. After that, the Aldobrandeschi ruled as feudal lords of the Pannocchieschi, until a quarter of Montieri fell to Siena in 1181 and Gerfalco had to give loyalty to the Republic of Siena as a result. This act was renewed in 1263 in a treaty between the Pannocchieschi and the Republic of Siena. On October 16, 1317, the place submitted to Massa Marittima , but returned to the sphere of influence of the Republic of Siena on October 13, 1318 and renewed this agreement in 1331 and 1340. In the 15th century, the place experienced a decline. In the conflict between Siena and Florence the place surrendered in 1554 and became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany .
