Gerhard Friedrich August Jansen (born June 6, 1791 in Jever , † April 9, 1869 in Oldenburg (Oldb) ) was an administrative officer, Privy Councilor and Chamber President in the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg .

Life

Jansen came from a Jever family of civil servants and was the son of the Anhalt-Zerbstian judicial and chamber councilor Gerhard Ulrich Jans (s) en (1749–1809) and his wife Margarethe Sophie nee. von Honrichs (1756-1802). He attended the Mariengymnasium Jever and studied law in Heidelberg and Göttingen . During his studies he became a member of the Corps Frisia Göttingen in 1809 .

With the occupation of Oldenburg by the French Empire , Jansen moved to the University of Brussels, as a French exam was a prerequisite for employment in the civil service. In August 1812 he acquired the degree of Licencié en droit in Brussels and was therefore exempted from the tentamen in 1814 and from the exam in 1816. He was then a lawyer at the Tribunal admitted in Jever and entered in 1814, after the return of Duke Peter Friedrich Ludwig , in the Oldenburg government service. He was initially an official auditor at the Tetten office (1814) and became chamber secretary (1816), chamber assessor (1818) and chamber councilor (1827) at the chamber in Oldenburg . From 1833 he was also a director of the widows, orphans and annuity funds. In 1838 he was appointed Privy Councilor at the Chamber in Oldenburg. He became Chairman Council (1840), Vice Chamber Director (1842) and State Councilor and Chamber Director (1844) at the Chamber in Oldenburg. He was chairman of the Oldenburg Military College (1846) and the Cadastral Directorate (1850) and finally President of the Chamber in Oldenburg (1856). For this he was appointed to the Privy Council.

Jansen mainly worked on questions of customs policy and was considered the most authoritative expert in this field, who had played a decisive role in all customs negotiations since 1830. When the chamber was dissolved in the course of the reorganization of the authorities in 1868, Jansen was consequently appointed chairman of the customs department.
