Gerhard Ouckama Knoop
Gerhard Ouckama Knoop (born June 9, 1861 in Bremen ; died September 7, 1913 in Innsbruck ) was a German writer and chemist.
Life
Knoop came from a long-established Bremen family. His father Hermann August Knoop (1831–1877) was a businessman, his mother Angelika, b. Ouckama, came from Holland. After secondary school and high school, Knoop began to study law in Freiburg , but switched to chemistry after one semester. After attending polytechnics in Hanover and Munich and completing practical training in Mulhouse , from 1885 he worked as a chemist in the Danilov calico factory in Moscow . He began to write from 1893, and in 1897 his first novel Die Karburg was published . From 1911 onwards, Knoop lived relatively secluded as a freelance writer in Munich-Neuhausen . He was an occasional guest in Baron Alexander von Gleichen-Rußwurm's salon and on Karl Wolfskehl's Thursdays . He was also in contact with Eduard von Keyserling , Rainer Maria Rilke , Ricarda Huch , Thomas Mann and Frank Wedekind .
In 1895 Knoop had married Gertrud Roth (1869–1967). Two daughters came from the marriage, Lilinka and the dancer Wera Knoop (1900-1919), who died young, to whom Rilke dedicated the sonnets to Orpheus as a “grave mark”. The poet Eugen Roth , nephew of Knoop's wife, wrote a short portrait of Wera in 1969. Knoop himself died at the age of 52 as a result of an arsenic cure that he had hoped would cure a heart condition. His grave is in the Munich forest cemetery .
In his work, Knoop shows himself at an ironic distance from a present to which his protagonists remain alien. Linguistically referring to the great models of the 19th century, he tends to romantic informality, which is already evident in the debut Die Karburg with the dissolution in the diary and continues in the other works: in Prince Hamlet's letters in the dissolution of letters or in the two volumes of The Limits in Disintegration in Notes and Aphorisms.
